Let's Talk Turkey! 12 Farms Where You Can Purchase a Thanksgiving Turkey in Central Illinois
November 14, 2019
Join Us at the Springfield Holiday Farmers Markets
October 28, 2016
Join us for the 10th annual Holiday Farmers Markets from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on the Illinois State Fairgrounds! We will be hosting two holiday markets: Saturday, November 19th in the Expo Building and Saturday, December 17th in the Illinois Building. Help us celebrate 10 years of fantastic local food!
Each of the Holiday Farmers Markets will include at least 35 vendors from central Illinois selling a wide variety of products, including pasture-raised turkeys, pork, beef, poultry, eggs, cheese, honey, coffee, craft beer, and Illinois wine. Fresh produce, including greens, garlic, potatoes, squash, radishes, carrots, apples and many other varieties will also be available.
Although the late fall and winter seasons are generally believed to be a time where there is very little in the way of fresh fruits and vegetables, many farmers have found inventive ways to extend their growing seasons, giving consumers more options for buying locally throughout the winter, while providing farmers an extra opportunity to earn income in the slower winter months.
“Good food starts with the good ingredients, and the holiday farmers markets give shoppers an opportunity to purchase the freshest, most delicious ingredients in central Illinois to help their holiday meals shine” says Lindsay Record, Executive Director, Illinois Stewardship Alliance. “The holiday farmers market are also a great place to pick up gifts or stock up on local food before the winter.”
Customers looking to pick up a Thanksgiving turkey can pre-order from Garden Gate Farm. The turkeys are pasture-raised with non-GMO feed and range in size between 6 and 24 lbs. They are priced at $4.00/lb and can be ordered via email firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone: 815-848-3518.
Copper Pot Cooking Studio will be preparing lunch items for purchase, including seasonal crepes, chili, squash and apple bisque, and herbed biscuits. Additionally, the University of Illinois extension will be hosting kids’ activities, making the holiday market a family friendly affair.
This event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by Illinois Stewardship Alliance, Slow Food Springfield, Illinois Wine, and the University of Illinois Extension.
